Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know
About Ayahuasca
What is ayahuasca?
Ayahuasca is a traditional Amazonian plant medicine brew made from the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and Psychotria viridis leaves. It has been used for centuries by indigenous communities for healing, spiritual growth, and ceremonial purposes.
Is ayahuasca legal in Peru?
Yes, ayahuasca is legal in Peru and is recognized as part of the country's cultural heritage. The use of ayahuasca in traditional ceremonial contexts is protected and respected.
What does ayahuasca feel like?
Experiences vary greatly between individuals and ceremonies. Common effects include visual and auditory experiences, deep emotional processing, physical sensations, and profound insights. The experience typically lasts 4-6 hours.
Logistics
What should I bring?
Bring comfortable, loose clothing (white for ceremonies), toiletries, flashlight/headlamp, insect repellent, sunscreen, journal, and any necessary medications. Leave jewelry and valuables at home. A detailed packing list will be provided upon booking.
How do I get to the retreat center?
Fly into Lima, then take a domestic flight to Pucallpa. We provide ground transportation from Pucallpa airport to the retreat center (included in program cost). Detailed travel instructions are sent after booking.
What are the accommodations like?
Private rooms with mosquito nets, fans, and basic amenities. Shared bathroom facilities with running water. Accommodations are comfortable but rustic, in harmony with the jungle setting.
Safety
Is ayahuasca safe?
When properly administered with appropriate screening and supervision, ayahuasca has a strong safety record. We conduct thorough medical screening, have experienced facilitators present 24/7, and maintain emergency protocols. However, it's not suitable for everyone - see our Safety section for contraindications.
What if I'm taking medications?
Many medications are contraindicated with ayahuasca, particularly SSRIs, MAOIs, and certain other antidepressants. You must disclose all medications during medical screening. Some require discontinuation 2-6 weeks before ceremony (only with doctor guidance).
What if I have a difficult experience?
Challenging experiences are sometimes part of the healing process. Our facilitators are trained to provide support and help you navigate difficult moments. You're never alone - staff is present throughout ceremonies and available 24/7.
Preparation
What is the dieta?
The dieta is a preparatory diet that typically begins 1-2 weeks before ceremony. It excludes certain foods (red meat, pork, aged cheeses, fermented foods) and substances (alcohol, recreational drugs). This helps prepare your body and respect the medicine.
Do I need previous experience?
No previous experience with ayahuasca or plant medicine is required. We welcome both first-timers and experienced practitioners. Our facilitators will guide you through every step of the process.
How should I prepare mentally?
Set clear intentions, practice meditation or mindfulness, journal about what you hope to work on, and approach the experience with openness and respect. Detailed preparation guidelines are provided after booking.
After the Retreat
What is integration?
Integration is the process of understanding and applying insights from ceremonies to daily life. We provide integration support during the retreat and offer follow-up calls. Many participants also work with integration therapists afterward.
